New investment solves track communications

Northamptonshire motorsport circuit, Whilton Mill is addressing two major problem areas for kart racing circuits by using the new functionality of the all-in-one track display solution, DiGi-Flag.

The new track display development from Sports Timing Systems has solved the issue of relaying information and warnings when there are two drivers on circuit with the same race number.

By using different background colours respective to the actual number plates, DiGi-Flag is able to communicate individual driver instructions during split grids.

DiGi-Flag is also reducing the problem of racers going outside of the circuit limits.

Contravention of circuit limits was highlighted in the changes to the MSA regulations for 2014 and is an on-going issue with marshals being unable to communicate warnings of this to drivers effectively.

DiGi-Flag is able to clearly communicate to individual drivers when they are straying outside of the circuit limits, allowing competitors to take corrective action.

The track display, which launched at the Autosport International Show in January, featured at the Stars at Whilton Mill Club Championship Round 2 on February 23 and is now a permanent installation at the circuit.

Whilton Mill circuit manager, Graeme Smith said: “The team have worked tirelessly to improve the circuit and facilities for both drivers and spectators.

“With the addition of DiGi-Flag to the circuit, Whilton Mill now offers one of the best karting experiences in the UK for both professional drivers and recreational activities.

“Investing in new solutions to address old problems is important to the growth of our events and we were rewarded with a successful second club championship round and some very positive feedback about our new display.”

DiGi-Flag allows officials to digitally display visual indications of circuit conditions, driver warnings and instructions instantly whilst the system continuously logs all interactions for post-race analysis.

The track display’s LED screen is operated by an official from race control and provides superior visibility over traditional flags and manual boards.
